The ethereal beauty of the New England landscape
has been an inspiration in my personal life as well as for my
photography during the last 21 years. Many of my photographic
journeys take me hiking along mountain tops and following nature's
paths. The early morning light, shade and shadow reveals the grace
and eternal power of the earth and air.
I began to oil paint photographs 28 years ago, while living in
San Francisco. People always asked me if I would make photographs
in color, but I preferred the long lasting quality of the black
and white image. Oil painting my photographs was a good solution
for obtaining an archival photograph with color.
I like to find subjects that have a strong sense of reality, but
at the same time capture the poetic imagination. I draw inspiration
from the worlds of both photography and painting. I individually
hand print and paint with oils on each of my pieces.
My 23 year career has concentrated primarily on photographing landscapes, architecture, and people. I often take on private commissions and I work in advertising. Clients include: Glenlivet Distillery, AT&T, New York Telephone, USA Network, Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, Simon Pearce Glass.
My work is also in the United State Embassy Trinidad & Tobago
and corporate and private collections and galleries around the
United States.

Artist Kathleen Welker lives and works in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire, creating romantic images through a unique technique employing both photography and painting. She colors the black and white photographs she takes with finely ground pigmented oil paints applied with cotton on wooden sticks. The effect is quite different from color photographs. Welker's interest in photography began 25 years ago while she was living in San Francisco. She began painting her photographs early in her career and has found the ethereal beauty of the New Hampshire landscape an ideal canvas for the images she produces. She enjoys finding compositional subjects that convey a strong sense of reality and capture the poetic imagination at the same time. Welker's works hang in many galleries and private collections throughout the United States. She has several commissioned clients and has won numerous awards for her photographs.
